DEAD OF WINTER WORKS, 2011- 2012
a sound series curated by Maria Chavez during November, 2010 to March 2011.

**This series has now finished and is only available to view online.**

Six solo artists or artist groups have been invited to execute aural-visual works in the Splatterpool main gallery space during the 'Dead of Winter' months. The title refers to a time period (December through February) when artists introspectively focus all of their individual and collective energies on completing works to be presented the upcoming season.

This series is meant to encourage artist to explore the usage and engagement of a gallery space, like Splatterpool, through the exposition of either a work-in-progress or a recently completed performance/installation piece. Each sound installation will remain on view for one weekend following an opening live performance by the featured artist during the preceding week.

A number of artists in the Dead of Winter series are currently focused primarily on sound performance and have expressed the desire to incorporate a visual aspect to their work. In doing so, these artists will have the opportunity to develop a new dimension within their practice.

Others involved in the series are seasoned multi-media installation artists. These artists have expressed a desire to find a place to show a newly finished work as a field test, to see if it physically functions properly and/or the idea expresses itself in the manner they have envisioned.

This series is meant to highlight the hybridity of avant garde sound art practices in the growing NYC sound art community.

Artists showing in this series will be: Richard Garet, David Linton, Byron Westbrook, Future Archaeology, Sarah Lipstate and Shelley Burgon.
